LIMASSOL WEATHER

Few words

The old town Lemesos (Limassol) is the heart of the city with its narrow streets radiating out from the old fishing harbour. The medieval Lemesos castle was the site of a royal wedding in the Middle Ages between Richard the Lionheart, King of England, and Berengaria of Navarre, and now houses the Cyprus Medieval MuseumThe Limassol Castle / The Medieval Castle: built by the Byzantines around 1000 A.D., was where Richard the Lionheart allegedly married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 and crowned her Queen of England – the first Coronation and Royal Marriage to take place out of England. Its grounds house the Medieval Museum of Cyprus displaying interesting pottery, tombstones, coats of arms, carvings and reliefs.

Municipal Market: The atmosphere, the abundance of fruits and vegetables, the traditional merchants and the customers that arrive there from surrounding villages, all draw an exciting picture.

The Limassol Marina will provide for the mooring of yachts at sea and on shore. Additionally, the project includes the development of residential, commercial units as well as buildings for cultural uses.

The location selected for the development of the Limassol Marina is adjacent to the heart of Limassol, making it a landmark development for the locals and an attraction for the visitors. Carefully designed to blend with the surrounding area of the old port, the old town and the castle, the project aims to become a unique residential and leisure destination.

The Limassol Marina is expected to enhance Nautical Tourism and put Cyprus at the centre of the yachting destination map. The project will also contribute to the upgrading and significant differentiation of the tourist product of Limassol.

NICOSIA WEATHER

Direction to Old City Nicosia

Few words

Nicosia Old City, with 5000 yearlong history, walking is the ideal way to get a feel for the character, history and continual cultural development of Lefkosia (Nicosia). Despite its historical difficulties, Nicosia is still the heart of Cyprus. This can be seen through the ongoing efforts to revitalize the old city, especially through the Nicosia Master Plan, executed under the auspices auspices of the United Nations Walking through Laiki Geitonia, you will see some remarkable examples of traditional urban architecture, such as the Leventis Municipal Museum and small art workshops. Visit Trypiotis Church (1695), the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage, and The Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection of the Bank of Cyprus. Phaneromeni Church is the biggest church in the walled city, and right across is the Cross of Missirikos, a medieval church with gothic Italian elements that was converted into Araplar Mosque in 1571.

At the heart of the inner wall city is the Omerie Area with the Omerie Mosque (once a 14th century Medieval Church dedicated to St. Mary of the Augustines), and the restored Turkish Baths, which won a EUROPA NOSTRA prize. An archaeological site with finds from the Byzantine and Medieval times lies next to the Municipal Arts Centre and the old inns. The 13th century church / 16th century Latin Cathedral of Agia Sofia, and the Selimiye Mosque, can be seen from a distance between the Green line and Turkish-occupied Nicosia.

In Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhood, the renovated houses are once again inhabited after lying derelict following the Turkish invasion of 1974. The most important building is the 18th century Archontiko Odou Axiotheas, which is now used by the University of Cyprus as a Cultural Centre. The 10th century Church of Chrysaliniotssa is next, followed by the Multi-Crafts Centre, which makes and sells contemporary handicrafts. At Ermou Street, you can visit the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) with over 1000 paintings by visitors to Cyprus in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The dead-end of Ermou Street is part of the Green Line (buffer zone), which is controlled by the UN. The religious and cultural centre of the city is Archbishop Kyprianos Square with the Cathedral of St. John, the Folk Art Museum and the Cultural Foundation of Archbishop Makarios the III with its Byzantine Museum. The Folk Art Museum, the Pan Cyprian Gymnasium Museums, and the Museum of National Struggle, offer another aspect of Cypriot culture and history.

From Famagusta Gate Cultural Centre, take a walk on top of the 16th century Venetian walls to see the moat and the modern city outside the walls. At Podocatoro Bastion you will see the Statue of Liberty, representing the Cypriot struggle against British rule (1955-1959). At the neighbourhood of Agios Antonios, visit the Mansion House of the Dragoman, Hadjigeorgakis Cornesios (18th century), which now houses the ethnological museum of the city.

An open-air market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at Constanza Bastion, next to Bayraktar Mosque. The commercial streets of Onasagoras and Ledra offer shops, restaurants, cafeterias and ice cream kiosks, whilst the Ledra Observatory Museum on the 11th floor of the Shacolas Tower building (in Ledra Street), offers an unobstructed view of the entire city.

Folk art museums like the one in Deryneia have wonderful rural artifacts on display. In Agia Napa, you and your family would do well to visit the Marine Life Museum or the recently built Sea Museum which contains a brilliant replica of a 4th century trading ship which sunk off the coast of Kyrenia.

LARNAKA WEATHER

Few words

Larnaca town was built over the ancient city kingdom of Kition. Larnaca has a beautiful sea port and historically was a major centre of copper trade and later a Phoenician stronghold.Remains of it can still be seen today in its cyclopean walls constructed with giant blocks of stone and a compound of Greek Mycenaean temples dating back to 12th Century. Take a stroll along ‘Phinikoudes’ the sea front promenade lined with palm trees and take a seat in one of the many cafes lined along the promenade. The marina here is a gathering ground for a community of friendly yachtsmen from all around the world. Charming villages are spread throughout the mountainous area of Larnaca and many traditional houses there are available for rent. Perhaps the most well known is the village of Lefkara. This is because it is perhaps the most scenic, having narrow streets, red-tiled roofs, courtyards, chapels, and a general feeling of being back in time whilst you’re there. The village of Lefkara has a rich history in producing exquisite handicrafts such as the world renowned ‘Lefkaritika’ which are items created by a traditional lace, and filigree silverware. It is said that the famous Leonardo da Vinci came here and purchased an altar cloth, which he subsequently donated to the cathedral in Milan. The village of Kiti contains the Angeloktisti Church; one of the best examples of Byzantine art. There you can see a mosaic dating back to the 6th century of the Virgin Mary and Child between two archangels.

The Holy Stavropaegic Monastery of Stavrovouni, one of the oldest in Cyprus, stands alone on top of a mountain with a panoramic 360 degree view of the surrounding hills and plains. Tradition has it that the piece of Holy Cross which is kept at the Monastery and is encased in a silver Cross, was brought over by Saint Helen, the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, and is available to the public to venerate. The village of Choirokoitia is a UNESCO World Heritage site, being one of the best preserved sites of a prehistoric settlement in the Eastern Mediterranean.

LIMASSOL WEATHER

Few words

Limassol (also called Lemesos) is the second largest city in Cyprus. It is the island’s main port, a main tourist centre and the centre of the wine industry of the island. Limassol has two of the most spectacular archaeological sites in Cyprus. Built on cliff tops the ancient cities of Amathous and Kourion are situated East and West respectively in the city with spectacular views overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Unearthed at Amathous the largest stone vase ever discovered (resting in the Louvre Museam in Paris) is just one of the finds that have made their way abroad to international museums from these ancient sites.
The southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains provide a picturesque backdrop to the city. It is on these southern slopes where the vineyards for Cyprus’ wine making industry are. Charming little villages spread throughout the southern slopes are known collectively as the ‘Krassochoria’ (which translate in to wine villages) where the traditional ways of wine-making are still kept. Come and have a sample of the island’s best wines. The most famous wine of all is Commandaria, one of the oldest named wines (eight centuries old) in the world. It was originally produced and exported by the Hospitallers, the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, from their headquarters at Kolossi Castle which still stands, situated on the outskirts of the city. On these southern slopes you’ll discover a different Cyprus from the traditionally known popular tourist resorts it is famous for. The foothills here offer a break from the hustle and bustle, a true retreat and a place of tranquility. Here you can take in the beautiful countryside and enjoy the traditional rural villages that live solely at their own pace.

CYPRUS WEATHER

Few words

Cyprus is an independent state island in the Mediterranean. Its geographical location favors it in many sectors as is located on the northwest between three continents, Europe, Asia and Africa, resulting in its strong present not remaining unnoted. Found in the third spot in the ranking of the largest islands after Sardinia and Sicily. Its neighboring countries are Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. In May 2004 it became officially part of the European Union balancing its relationship with Europe, Middle East and the surrounding countries. With its integration it opened the door to many people to get to know the country through its riches and the characteristic attributes of its residents which do not alter their timelessness, such as friendliness, courtesy and the humanity of Cypriots who offer them to every visitor. It can be considered as a dreamy destination for every type of person. Local produce such as halloumi, zalatina and carob trees, which are described as Cyprus’ ‘black gold’ by the locals. The Mediterranean climate even with the climate change being notable, maintains the balance between 8oC during winter and 35oC during summer. Cyprus along its historic path has been affected by many conquerors such as Romans, Egyptians, Frank and Ancient Greeks. The archeological and cultural treasure is immense in choices, sites available while you trek around the city, museums, gallery and ingenious alternative outings such as nature trails and sea sports. The variety of shades of its blue sea are unforgettable for many, in fact some have been awarded the blue flag by Europe. It is one of the safest countries with a low criminal rate. I addition, in the sectors of business, shipping, tourism and many others it is displaying a rising course within the European Market.
