Atalanti Nature Trail took its name after the mythological runner and trainee of the goddess Artemis. Brave and uncompromising, unwed woman who lived based on the values of Artemis. The route begins and end at the Troodos square. The outdoor shed of the starting point is located on the northwest of the Square behind the old post office building. If you reach Troodos in a vehicle there is a parking space available ta the Square.
The course of the route is not characterised by the high level of hiking difficulty. However, you must be especially prudent as you traverse as there are bulky rocks. The specific Trail is harmonised ideally with the Artemis Nature trail as of mutual level hiking routes. Both rotate around the Chionistra, however Atalanti Trail is of ground and altitude at a lower level. Its circular course is trekked amongst a cluster of thick black pine trees, additionally on your exploration you will come across Juniper trees, 800 years old. While you walk it is important to note the signs which provide important information about the rare protected species of flora and unique rock formation of the Opholite complex of the mountain range.

Points of interest

The trail goes around Chionistra at an altitude of 1700-1750 m., passing through dense thickets of Pinus Nigra and Troodos Juniper Phoenicia. One of the largest Junipers which is 800 years old can be found in the area. There is an outstanding view of the entire island. Of particular interest is the entrance to a disused chromium mine which ceased its operations in 1982. At 3 kms from the Troodos Square is a spring with drinking water.

1. Do not move outside the signs along the trail so that you can protect the rare plant types within the forested area.
2. Do not smoke and keep your food inside your backpacks. Protect the environmental treasure from unexpected fires.
3. Do not make unnecessary noise. Respect the natural world of the birds, the animals and enjoy the natural sounds.
4. Maintain the space clean. Leave your trash in the bins or choose to take them with you.
5. Spend the night in the visitors’ camp sites.
6. The entrance to vehicles within the path is not allowed.
7. Protect the natural beauty by avoiding cutting branches, bushes or unrooting plants and carving trees.
8. The lighting of fires in protected areas is strictly prohibited. Respect what is offered from nature and the camping site. Lighting fires is allowed ONLY in special barbecue sites.

taking its name after the dynamic, pioneer and Olympian Goddess Artemis, protector of wild animals, mountain, forests and leader of the Amazons.
The hiking route rotates around the Chionistra, at an altitude of 1850m. With the aiding signalling you can widen the forested scope. Along the trail you will find two of the longest living black pines, aging 500 years. In the forest there are many rare types of flora species such as the nepeta, the teucrium, the alison, the chamomile and the invisible and of unmatched notable value rocks such as dunite, harzburgite, pyroxenite.
Of similar historic importance and notability are the Wall of the Old Chora which are ruins of the fortification work structure during the last year of the Venetian period in Cyprus (1571 AD), by one of the military team of the Venetian with the goal to hold off the attack of the Ottomans. After the observation of the occupation of the at the time Chora ( Nisocia) powerless against the Ottomas the decided to surrender. The panoramic vies is unique. The visitors are like Olympian gods watching from above the outskirts of the Limassol, Paphos and Nicosia provinces surrounded by a verdant green treasure. The route is part of National Forest Park of Troodos, which is included in the NATURA 2000 region. The trail is not distinguished by a particular difficulty apart from its finish point, after the Skiing Centre, where the trail turns into an upward wave of an uphill route for 200-300 meters.

Points of interest

The Pinus Nigra forest, rare species of flora and rocks of the area. Of historic interest are the ruins of rough fortifications built during the final year of the Venetian occupation of Cyprus (1571 AD) by a group of Venetian generals who decided to put up a defence against the Ottomans at that point. The route is circular going round Olympos mountain peak (Chionistra) at an altitude of 1850m. Provides spectacular views in all directions. It ends at a point on the Atalanti trail.
