Few words

The Agios Geogios Mavrovouniou Monastery (Saint George of the Black Hill) is a relatively unknown men’s monastery in Cyprus and is located near the village of Troulloi in the province of Larnaca. The church of the monastery is dedicated to Saint George. But the area (black hill) refers to the dark soil and rock of the hills of the region. It is well known that, in ancient times, the whole of Cyprus was under the sea. The first tops of the land to arise out of the water were two volcanic masses: Troodos, and the Black Hill area. The beginning of this monastery’s beginning is actually unknown, but there is some evidence to suggest it was originally built in the 11th century. The church was restored in the 18th century and took roughly its present shape. It was finally fully restored in1996 where it became an active monastery for men. There is a miracle-working icon of Saint George here which has performed many miracles since it was found and restored.

The monastery of Saint George of the Black Hill is, therefore, a place for those who are spiritually inclined, as well as a place of exploration and study for amateur or professional geologists.
