From the crystal clear waters of the southeast coast of Cyprus to the verdant green forests of the mountainous heart of the island (Machairas Forest), the Blue Route has it all. The route starts in the Famagusta region and includesProtaras, Cape Greko and Ayia Napa, all found within a 15-minute drive radius.

Walk long Piale Pasha street to Mackenzie Beach, where nightlife thrives or continue to the Salt Lake for a unique experience. Alternatively, form Finikoudes walk to the city’s square and for a refreshing shopping experience.

Drive along the sea front, via the old Larnaca Limassol Road E321, and visit the fishing village of Zygi for a taste of the freshest and best seafood on the island at the local taverns by the Harbour. From there set out to the mountainous area of Larnaca.

    We recommend the Agioi Anrgyroi- Thlassines Spilies (Sea Caves) trail which takes an hour and a half to complete, which begins at the whitewashed quaint chapel of Agioi Anargyroi and takes you long the coast to the magical sea caves, passes by the ‘Kamara tou Koraka’ natural bridge. For a shorter circular trial, the Aphrodite trail, takes you on a 3km long walk along the coast. If you are looking for a challenge, trek along the circular sea cave route, past rugged, bumpy and steep peaks. Regardless which trail you choose, the spectacular views of the crystal blue waters, merging into tall rocks and wild nature are guaranteed to take your breath away. Alternatively, cycle through the designated paths and enjoy the coast on wheels!

    Mirroring the surrounding nature, the unique building of the Cape Greko Environmental Center found in the area, houses information and exhibitions of the land and marine ecosystem of the Cape Greko peninsula. Visit it to discover the aquariums and exhibitions and learn more about the nature of the island.

    Experience firsthand the marine life of the Mediterranean Sea by going for a dive or snorkeling in the deep blue underwater of the coast. Visit the historic 19 th century lighthouse of the area or visit the picturesque beach of Konnos. The Blue Flag awarded beach of Konnos, comprises steep pine covered slopes merge into the crystal clear waters. Enjoy the breathtaking view from the top, or walk along the pine filled pathways to the beach. From there access the National Forest Park, which belongs to the Natura 2000 network.

It was June 1980, when a Swedish ferry named Zenobia, filled with 104 trailers and trucks sunk, 1.5km off the coast of Larnaca’s fishing harbor, forming one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world. At a depth of 42m, with a visibility of up to 50 m and temperatures ranging from 16 o C to 27 o C ins summer, the Zenobia wreck offers a reef inhabited by many species of fish including grouper, barracuda, kingfish, jacks and tiger fish as well as moray eels, stingrays, turtles and octopus.

Above the “Arkatzin” (river), which traverses the village, is the Saint Constantine and Helen church, said to have been founded by Saint Helen herself. Golden Donkeys Farm is located in Skarinou village, halfway between Larnaca and Limassol. When building it, we were based on our love and care for sustaining the Cyprus traditions. And we really wanted to help preserve the heritage of Cyprus – friendly and industrious animals, which many centuries faithfully served the Cypriots. After all, it is the Cyprus donkeys, who were the indispensable tool: they transported food and wine, they were the primary mode of transportation on the island for many centuries, it was the donkeys that helped in the production of olive oil, turning the heavy millstones, and in the manufacture of wine, carrying grapes from mountain plantations.

Next stop is the idyllic and picturesque village of Kato Drys. Its name translates to ‘lower oak’ and its existence dates back to the Byzantine period. It is the birthplace of Agios Neofytos the Recluse. Located between Kato Drys and Vavla village, is the 15 th century monastery of Agios Minas. The building consists of a church, cloisters and other monastic buildings and combines Byzantine and Gothic architecture. On the north and south walls there are two large paintings of Saint George and Saint Minas, dating back to 1757. The nuns who reside at the monastery, engage in icon painting, cultivating and selling fruit and homemade preserves, along with practicing their religious duties. Visit the monastery to discover inner peace and tranquility.

Located on the foot of Troodos Mountains, at an altitude of 650m, the village took its name after the lime stone rock of the region.

    Trail along the winding quaint narrow streets, framed by traditional, terracotta roofed old houses. Meet the local women who often sit outside their homes creating the renowned ‘Lefkaritiko’ lace, a tradition dating back to Venetian times and part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

    Learn more about this historic tradition and the craft of filigree silver pieces at the Lefkara Handicraft Centre, the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing, watch the craftsmen t work or have a go at creating one at the various workshops. Unearth historic sites such as the old fountain, the old aquaduct, the old olive mill or take a stroll amongst olive tree orchards at Oliva Terra –Ktima Sofokleous, and learn about the island’s ‘liquid gold’. For a sample of the religious roots of the island, visit the Timios Stvros church and the chapel of Archangel Michael in Kato Lefkara, where you can admire frescoes dating back to the 12 th and 15 th century. For the sport lovers follow the linear nature trail or the designated cycling routes, immersing yourselves in the verdant nature surrounding the village.

    If you find yourselves in the village during the month of August, be sure to visit the annual Lefkara Festival, enjoy handicraft exhibitions, dance shows and theatre to the tunes of music programs.

    Travel just 4km north of the village to find the Lefkara Dam. Machairas monastery was founded in the 12 th century after two monks discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary in a nearby cave. Built with thick stonewalls, powerful buttresses, ascetic cells and a bridge that runs over narrow trench, the monastery stands tall amid the lush forest.

    Having survived many fires, the present church found in the centre of the courtyard, dedicated to the Virgin Mary if Machera, was rebuilt in 1892. Housed inside is the miraculous icon, attributed to Apostle Luke. Admire the 19-meter-high bell tower built in 1900, as well as the wood carved iconostasi crafted on 1919-1921 by Georgios Kyriakou. Below the monastery are the original monk’s cells, stable and storage area. Unearth the collection of old books, manuscripts, icons and religious artefacts. The historic monastery ensues tranquillity and peace, where visitors must enter in silence, properly attired and follow the monks’ instructions.

    Immerse yourselves in one of the largest forests of the island the Machairas forest. Part of the forest has been declared as a Special Protection Are and an Important Bird Area (IBA), as it houses many unique species of flora and fauna. It is traversed by the rivers Pediaiod and Gialia, which enhance the natural beauty of the forest.

    Near the forest discover the historic ‘Stavraetou Machaira’ hideout of the EOKA fighter Grigoris Afxentiou, who was burned alive inside during the liberation fight 1955-59.

    At the monastery find a small museum, operating since 2006 in memory of the hero, exhibiting personal items, pictures and war object he used during the fight, newspaper and magazine scraps of the time as well as poems referring to his heroic death. His hideout, where he left his last breath in 1957 after a shepherd betrayed him, is located near the Monastery, down a track into a wooden valley.

Machairas Cycling Route

Machairas Mountain is a great point for cyclist. The most popular cycling route is the Machairas route. This 25 kilometres excursion ascends into Machairas forest and on to the Pitsylia area. From Machairas Monastery the route heads west passing through the small villages of Lazanias and Gouri, where it turns south to Farmakas. From Farmakas it heads southwest, descending towards the main Lefkosia (Nicosia) – Palaichori road, with Palaichori dam to the left. From there the road turns left to go through Apliki, climbing steadily for 5 Κm until it reaches Palaichori itself.

    Starting point: Kionia picnic site. There are two access points to the trail – one from the Machairas monastery road that leads to Kionia, and the other from the Vavatsinia to Machairas road.
    Length: 7km
    Estimated duration: 2.5 hours
    Degree of difficulty: 3 (steep downhill path, especially towards the end)

    Points of interest: The trail starts at the Kionia picnic site, where you can find a fountain with drinking water, and runs through a forest section where it affords great views of the Mesaoria plain, which belongs to the Machairas National Forest Park a Natura 2000 site. There is a perennial strawberry tree on the trail, whilst the picnic site boasts perennial pine and arar trees. The trail ends at the Profitis Ilias picnic site, approximately eight kilometres from Lythrodontas and six kilometres from Mandra tou Kambiou, via dirt roads.
    Flora: While hiking you can study the endemic plants: Shrubby knapweed (Ptilostemon chamaepeuce var. cyprius), Golden oak (Quercus alnifolia), Purple Rock Cress (Arabis purpurea), ‘Manouthkia’ (Pterocephalus multiflorus subsp. multiflorus – an evergreen small shrub with pale pink flowers). Fauna: The main species of fauna found in the area are:
    Mammals: Fox, hare, hedgehog.
    Birds: Bonelli’s eagle, Eurasian jay, Wood pigeon, Partridge, Cyprus warbler (endemic), Cyprus wheatear (endemic).
    Reptiles: Cyprus viper, Black whip Snake, Cyprus lizard.

It is one of Cyprus’s most beautiful settlements. Lazania is a neighbourhood in Nicosia that was constructed at a height of roughly 900 metres. In the village of Lazanias, as you stroll through its meandering, stone-built streets, you will see brick-built, tiled homes with lovely balconies supported by wooden beams and featuring carved windows and doors. Churches with great architectural and archaeological worth may be found in the village of Lazanias, including the 19th-century St. George church. the 870-meter-high chapel of Agios Mamas and the Machaira Monastery situated atop the mountain Kionia in the Machairas Mountains valley.
