Linear Trail

The route begins from the river Karkoti and enter the valley where the goddess Aphrodite once frequented. Near the valley you will meet the old chromium mine and it ends in Kakopetria. At the trail you have the chance to visit Agio Nikolao (Saint Nikolas) tis Stegis. A chapel of the 12th century, decorated in frescoes. It is a considered a jewel of architecture of Cyprus and I part of the world heritage list of UNESCO. Thereafter from the church you can head towards the Pedoula – Kakopetria road for three kilometers and find yourselves in beautiful Kakopetria. The trail Kannoures Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis is includes in the nature trails within the Troodos National Forest Park. It is one more trail with rich flora and fauna.

Starting point

On the main street Karvouna- Plateias Troodous, 1 km before the Troodos main square, 9,5 km from Karvouna. It ends at the Church of Αgios Nikolaos tis Stegis or it continues up until the Kakopetria Village. Length: 9 km (12 km to the Kakopetria Village) – Duration : 3 hours (4 hours to the Kakopetria Village) – Degree of Difficulty: 3 (relatively difficult downhill route)

Points of interest

Forest landscape. It starts from the source of the Karkoti river and it crosses the beautiful valley of the river. It passes neat the facilities of the closed chrome mine and ends up at the Kakopetria Village. The route can pass by the Church of Agios Nicolaos tis Stegis (12th century ), that has some excellent murals and it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Catalogue. Right from the Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis the walker can follow the paved road Pedoula – Kakopetrias for about 3 km to end up to the Kakopetria Village.

1. Do not move outside the signs along the trail so that you can protect the rare plant types within the forested area.
2. Do not smoke and keep your food inside your backpacks. Protect the environmental treasure from unexpected fires.
3. Do not make unnecessary noise. Respect the natural world of the birds, the animals and enjoy the natural sounds.
4. Maintain the space clean. Leave your trash in the bins or choose to take them with you.
5. Spend the night in the visitors’ camp sites.
6. The entrance to vehicles within the path is not allowed.
7. Protect the natural beauty by avoiding cutting branches, bushes or unrooting plants and carving trees.
8. The lighting of fires in protected areas is strictly prohibited. Respect what is offered from nature and the camping site. Lighting fires is allowed ONLY in special barbecue sites.
