PEGEIA WEATHER

Avakas Gorge Trail

Linear Trail

Avakas Gorge is located near the bay of Toxeftras, accompanies Akamas in the province of Paphos. You will find it as you head towards Agio Georgio (Saint George) of Pegia.
The specific gorge is an untold grandeur for nature lovers. There one meets a vastness of fauna and flora such as pistachia, oleander, porcupines, hares, lizards and frogs. The ending part of the gorge is in the stream with the water never running dry throughout the year. The difficulty level is doubted by many nature lovers. Some claim it is arduous due to the height of the gorge and the slippery rocks of the stream, there is also a continues worry about unexpected landslides. On the other hand many say there is no reason of concern, that it is even suitable for small children who are in hiking groups.
Our planet having as nature as an assistant and the copious vegetation as a tool and the rocky complexes of land and water has designed the geological grounds of Cyprus as it pleased with the passing of time, without us tiny humans realising. As a modern Michelangelo sketched his own Sistine Chapel on the grounds of the Paphos province. The gorge is surrounded by ferns, wild fig trees, oak trees and a plethora of wild flowers.

Points of interest

The Avakas Gorge Trail is located in the homonymous gorge, within Pegeia state forest with the end of the trail located inside the gorge. It follows the course of the Avgas River, from where the gorge gets its name and resulted from constant erosive activity on the erodible, sloping limestone rocks composed of loams, chalks, reef and grain limestone and bentonitic clays. The gorge is also a Natura 2000 area. The trail firstly follows a dirt road (closed to private vehicles) through an open valley, then takes you into the gorge. In its last section, the trail is in the stream, in which water usually flows throughout the year. The route through the gorge is characterised by thick vegetation and a particularly attractive, shady and moist environment.
